The Care Certificate Training

Curriculum

Understanding Your Role

Learning Objective:
Explain the role and responsibilities of care workers to ensure safe and person-centred support.

Understanding Your Role in the Sector

In the health and social care sector, your role involves more than just performing tasks — it includes delivering safe, compassionate care while respecting the dignity, rights, and confidentiality of every individual. As a care worker, you are expected to:

  • Deliver person-centred care
  • Maintain accurate reporting
  • Uphold individuals’ dignity and independence
  • Communicate effectively with your team and clients
  • Understand legal duties such as safeguarding and confidentiality

The Care Certificate ensures new care workers follow a consistent, regulated standard from day one.

Scope of Practice

“Scope of practice” refers to the duties you’re trained and allowed to perform. Staying within your scope ensures safe and ethical care. To avoid mistakes or overstepping:

  • Review your job description regularly
  • Consult with your manager or supervisor when unsure
  • Follow your organization’s policies and procedures
  • Never perform a task you’re not trained or authorized for
  • Always ask if you’re unsure whether a task is part of your role.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Accountability means being responsible for your actions and ensuring your work meets expected standards. This includes:

  • Following care plans properly
  • Reporting any hazards or concerns
  • Keeping information confidential
  • Respecting and empowering every person in your care
  • Your professional behavior affects trust, safety, and quality of care. Be consistent, honest, and follow through on all assigned duties.

Legal Framework in Health and Care Settings

You must follow the law to protect both yourself and those you care for. Key areas include:

  • Duty of Care: Acting in the best interest of individuals
  • Confidentiality: Never sharing private information unnecessarily
  • Whistleblowing: Reporting unsafe or illegal practices
  • Equality and Diversity: Treating everyone fairly and respectfully
  • Understanding these laws ensures your practice is compliant, safe, and professional.

Knowledge Check – Responsibilities in Care

✅ Correct:

  • ✔️ Reporting hazards promptly
  • ✔️ Maintaining confidentiality
  • ✔️ Respecting individuals’ privacy

  • ❌ Sharing private information to stay “transparent”

Summary:

  • Know your role and its boundaries
  • Stay accountable and responsible in your daily tasks
  • Always work within legal and ethical frameworks
  • Person-centred care is the foundation of high-quality care
